Main purpose and role of SQM and EQM

The Saudi Quality Mark (SQM) and the Emirates Quality Mark (EQM) are national quality marks certifying that products comply with local safety and quality standards in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, respectively. SQM is issued by SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization), while EQM is issued by ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology). Both systems are designed to protect consumers, enhance trust in products, and encourage manufacturers to meet strict quality standards.

Differences in product requirements

SQM and EQM have different technical requirements. In Saudi Arabia, SQM emphasizes compliance with SASO national standards, which are based on regional and international regulations but often include stricter safety demands. In the UAE, EQM requirements are also based on international standards; however, they are sometimes more flexible to facilitate trade and product entry. Manufacturers must carefully review both sets of requirements to avoid non-compliance.

Differences in certification processes and timelines

The SQM certification process is generally longer and includes a mandatory factory audit, product laboratory testing, and regular surveillance inspections. The average SQM process takes about 4–6 months. In contrast, EQM certification can be slightly faster, usually around 3–5 months, and sometimes allows partial use of existing test reports from outside the UAE. Both processes require thorough document preparation and full compliance with technical regulations.

Differences in cost and certificate maintenance

SQM certification tends to be more expensive due to stricter audits and additional testing requirements. Moreover, Saudi Arabia imposes higher annual fees to maintain the certification. EQM certification usually involves lower costs, and the renewal process can be simpler. Despite these differences, both certifications require continuous quality control and regular document updates to maintain validity.
