The main purpose of the IEC is to promote international cooperation on standartization in the field of electrical engineering, including electronics, magnetism and electromagnetism, electroacoustics, multi-media, remote communications, energy production and distribution, as well as related general disciplines such as terminology and symbols, electromagnetic compatibility, measurement, safety and environmental protection.
The standards, together with IEC’s conformity assessment systems, ensure that the thousands of electrical devices used world-wide every day perform, fit and work safely together.
The IEC comprises 81 national standards bodies from 81 countries, 174 committees in 1,188 working groups, and standards and terms are published in 13 languages.
